Just hidden west of Marietta Square and right across the street from Jones & Swanson is Kat’s Family Barber Shop. A seasoned local of Marietta, Kat has been at her current Marietta location for 5 years, and over that time she has easily shown how big her heart is, and how immense her love is for this community!
When you first enter her barber shop it reminds you of something you’d see in movies, from the cobblestone floor to the old-timey hair-cutting tools on the wall. Kat ties this all together with her bright personality!
Jones & Swanson were lucky we had the chance to interview Kat, and we want to give you insight into why she is quite possibly the best barber in town.
Tell Me About Yourself, Who Are You?
“I am Katherine (Kat) Cherches. I’ve had my barbers license for 53 years. I was married until 4 years ago when my husband passed away. I have 3 sons, all grown and productive adults! All my sons graduated from Marietta High School. I’ve been a member of the Presbyterian Church for over 30 years and lived in Marietta for about 40 years.”
When Did You Open Your Barbershop?
“Originally Kat’s was opened in May of 1992. I had a shop in Mableton years ago, but it was under a different name ‘Contemporary cuts’.”
Kat’s shop was not always in the location it is now. She started Kat’s Family Barber Shop in Powder Springs and it stayed there for 25 years. She then moved her barber shop to her new location in Marietta 5 years ago.
Do You Have Any Crazy Stories Or Funny Moments With Clients?
“Oh, I have many over the years! I’ve done several Santas, so I’m a pro hairstyle and beard trimmer for Santa! I’ve had 6 gentlemen that have been Santa over the years and some of them are regular customers. I had one that even sat for the Make-a-Wish Foundation. I’ve got some really neat clients and a wide variety that come in here. I’ve got architects, judges, and submarines.”
Given the timing of the season, this is the perfect opportunity for anyone who wants to be a Santa; Kat is the one barber to go to!
How Do You Feel About The Community In Marietta?
“I have lived here for 40 years and I’m never living north of here. That includes Woodstock or Kennesaw.”
Mrs. Kat continued to talk about how she loves it in Marietta, and how she is never willing to leave no matter the distance. She has raised her sons and ran a business and is proud to have started it all here.
“There is no better place than around Marietta Square.”
Is There Anything You Want People To Know About Yourself Or Your Business?
“I’m a small hometown business. My son said it best the first time he ever came in here and he looked around,“You know Mom it kinda looks like a modern Floyd’s from Mayberry.””
For those who don’t know, Floyd’s is the barber shop for The Andy Griffith Show. Easily, Mrs. Kat’s has the same old-timey feel to it. She has her back wall filled with old barber tools that her husband made the cases for. They add the perfect sentimental touch to her shop!
What Do You Love Most About Your Business?
“Getting to talk to different people! It’s definitely what has helped me since my husband passed. I still have a variety of people to talk to so being able to help people when I’m able. Also just knowing what people are going through and giving them a little bit of advice to help them through.”
Mrs. Kat is someone who wants to help those around her from giving haircuts to advice. Even while at Kat’s shop during this interview, clients were able to testify how amazing she is:
“I came here because she is highly acclaimed.”
“This has been life-changing for me, it’s great.”
“I won’t go anywhere else this is my favorite spot.”
Jones & Swanson will continue to support and use Kat’s services even ourselves! We love and appreciate her kindness and constant uplifting attitude towards this community. Thank you again Kat for your time, and we hope everyone would take the time to stop by and check out her awesome shop!
