Labor Day Weekend: What You Should Know

The end of summer is here—Labor Day weekend, a national treasure for many,  brings fun in the sun and good times with our families. However, it is important to remind ourselves about the dangers associated with the holiday and consider these important safety tips.

PLAN AHEAD

  • If you plan to enjoy a few drinks this Labor Day weekend, arrange for a ride. Never get behind the wheel of a car if you are not sober. Remember, buzzed driving is drunk driving
  • If you plan to light up the grill this weekend, ensure it is in working condition. Check for gas leaks, cracks, or any potential fire hazards that lurk in your cooking area.
  • Check your local laws for fireworks. If you plan to set off fireworks this weekend make sure you are aware of local burn bans and familiarize yourself with Georgia Law
  • It is important to keep up to date on recent health and safety news. Check for any local guidelines or restrictions before you leave your home.

PAY ATTENTION

  • If you’re at a pool, lake, or beach this weekend, always keep an eye on your loved ones for potential dangers or accidents, even if a lifeguard is present. It only takes a second of your attention to miss the signs of someone drowning
  • Monitor your grill while in use. While enjoying your time outside,  never leave open flames and cooking equipment unattended.
  • Watch out for others who do not appear sober. Never let someone leave unless you know for certain they can drive safely. It is always best to find them a ride home instead of taking any risks.

ACT WITH CAUTION

  • When using fireworks, remember they must be lit in open areas away from buildings and crowds. Always have water or a fire extinguisher on hand in case of fire.
  • Remember to consume plenty of water throughout the day, especially if you’re out in the sun. It may be tempting to continue drinking sugary drinks or alcoholic beverages continuously, but remember to take breaks!
  • This weekend will be hot and sunny! Remember to regularly reapply sunscreen and wear protective clothing.

Jones & Swanson hopes that everyone has a safe and fun-filled Labor Day, and takes the time to enjoy and appreciate the hard work of American workers. We encourage everyone to engage in festivities mindfully and responsibly and remember to PLAN AHEAD, PAY ATTENTION, and ACT WITH CAUTION.
