Allstate paired with the Georgia Department of Transportation and 25 other cities to identify and mark intersections which are particularly dangerous to motorcyclists. They began this campaign in the summer of 2009. The 25 cities were chosen according to those which tended to host large motorcycle rallies with the Atlanta area ranking near the top.
Allstate hopes that by identifying and marking these dangerous intersections they can cut down on the number of motorcycle accidents involving serious injury and death. Bringing this information to the public’s attention can also help make drivers more aware of the need for caution at these intersections.
Statistics indicate that most accidents happen at intersections. Another alarming statistic shows that every day at least 3 deaths occur in motorcycle accidents. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration a motorcyclist involved in a crash has a 35 times greater chance of death than a person involved in a car crash and 16 times the rate of serious injury.
In 2011, with the statistical information gathered, they began posting special signs at the intersections found to be the most dangerous for motorcyclists. Allstate is generously donating all the signs which are yellow and diamond shaped with the silhouette of a motorcycle and the word LOOK. These signs are designed to bring motorcycle awareness to mind for the motorists.
Several intersections in Fulton & Dekalb counties have been determined to be especially dangerous for motorcyclists.
