The holiday season is quickly approaching. To start it off, Halloween offers trick or treating and parties galore! Unfortunately, Halloween can also be dangerous for a variety of reasons. Not only is there a higher risk of automobile-pedestrian crashes, but costumes and candy pose a threat as well if the appropriate precautions aren’t taken.
At Jones & Swanson, we want everyone to enjoy their Halloween festivities, so we’ve come up with a list of helpful safety tips for everyone to keep in mind:
- Do not trick or treat alone, but instead travel in larger groups.
- Use reflective clothing or tape if walking through neighborhoods or near roads so that automobile drivers can better see you. Flash lights can also be used to draw attention to those who are trick or treating.
- Before crossing the street, look both ways and make sure no vehicles are in sight.
- Walk only on sidewalks when possible and towards the flow of traffic if you must travel on roadways for short periods of time.
- Ensure that costumes fit well and that masks and shoes do not hinder your sight or ability to move. These things can cause falls and injuries.
- Only wear decorative contact lenses that have been prescribed by your eye doctor.
- Test make up for your costumes on a small part of your skin first so that negative reactions can be avoided.
- Parents should walk with their children while trick or treating. Make sure that kids do not run or go near busy roadways.
- If you are driving, be extra cautious as there will be many children out on the roadways trick or treating.
In order for this Halloween holiday to be safe and fun one, everyone should take responsibility for their actions and those of their children. Following these safety tips will lead to a much happier Halloween!
