Georgia’s Operation Southern Slow Down

This week Georgia drivers will experience the 8th consecutive year in a row of “Operation Southern Slow Down”, a joint safety effort created by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the states of  Alabama, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and Tennessee.

WHAT IS OPERATION SOUTHERN SLOW DOWN?

Operation Southern Slow Down is a speeding awareness campaign driven by increased enforcement across the southern states. The campaign will run from Sunday, July 14 until Saturday, July 20th.

State and Local law enforcement will be conducting this campaign with “concentrated enforcement on interstates and major highways.”  This increased presence aims to crack down on speeding and aggressive driving.

WHAT’S THE DATA?

Speeding endangers all, over the last two decades it has been involved in approximately 1/3 of all motor vehicle fatalities. In 2022 alone, speeding-related incidents have killed 12,151 people, 52% of which were also not wearing seat belts. This accounts for 29% of all traffic fatalities that year (NHTSA).

WHAT ARE THE CONSEQUENCES OF SPEEDING?

Speeding is more than illegal, speeding causes various risks for you as a driver:

  • Greater risk of loss of control
  • Increased risk of crash severity which can cause catastrophic injury
  • Increased braking distance needed
  • Reduced safety protection from vehicle features
  • Increased risk of rollover incident
  • Increased fuel consumption
  • Increased vehicle wear and tear

Aggressive driving and speeding behaviors are a danger to everyone, whether you are late, distracted, disconnected, or have an overall disregard for the laws of the road, no reason is worth the risk of your life, and the lives of those around you. Jones & Swanson encourages everyone to follow the posted speed limits and laws of their local roads and stay vigilant of other speeders.
