UM coverage is not required under Georgia law; however, the law does require your insurer to give you the option. Your insurer will typically permit you to purchase UM coverage up to the same limits as your liability coverage. This may be a factor in determining how much liability coverage you purchase, giving you the opportunity to purchase additional UM coverage. Unfortunately, we frequently represent people who have been injured by totally uninsured individuals, individuals who flee, or individuals who carry the minimum $25,000 in liability coverage required by Georgia law. As a result, those clients are sometimes unable to recover for the full value of their injuries.
For that reason, we highly encourage you to always opt to include UM coverage in your policy and to purchase as much UM coverage as you can afford. The coverage is relatively inexpensive, and increases in coverage are typically minimal versus the potential return. In selecting UM coverage, please also be sure to select add-on coverage as described above. Lastly, BE AWARE of insurers who pre-select a rejection of UM coverage for you when signing all the necessary forms to open the policy.
