In the second and final half of our Cinco de Mayo education series, the staff of Jones & Swanson hopes to educate readers on how to identify a drunk driver on Georgia roadways. While we hope that drivers will make smart decisions by choosing not to drive after consuming alcohol, it is best to be prepared for such an event just in case.
Here’s a list of behaviors to look out for in other drivers while traveling this Cinco de Mayo, and really any day of the year:
- Weaving or veering into other lanes or off the side of the road
- Rapid acceleration or deceleration
- Erratic braking
- Tailgating or following too closely to other vehicles
- Colliding with or nearly hitting curves, mail boxes, parked vehicles, or other objects near the roadway
- Straddling the center line
- Not using headlights while driving at night
- Driving well below the speed limit
- Making wide, abrupt, or illegal turns
- Signaling inappropriately
While drunk drivers are a serious risk to themselves, they are even more hazardous to those around them. This is why it is important you know how to identify potential intoxicated drivers so that you can report them immediately. We each play a role in keeping Georgia roadways safe. And while it is the job of law enforcement officials to handle drunk drivers, you should not feel adversely to assisting in identification of those drivers.
