Thousands of people are injured each year in auto accidents resulting from the negligence of a driver impaired by drugs or alcohol. As hard as it is to believe, these accidents can happen right in our back yard.
Atlanta police officers are investigating a Buckhead drunk driving accident that occurred early Wednesday morning. A bicyclist traveling through the heart of Buckhead was struck by an allegedly drunk driver and severely injured. The cyclist, Christopher Hamer-Hodges, was reported to have been hit by a SUV around 1 AM at the intersection of Peachtree Road and West Paces Ferry Road. According to several witnesses, Hamer-Hodges had the right of way when the drunk driver’s vehicle threw him from the bicycle.
The driver of the SUV, David Seigel, fled the scene and had to be stopped by police officers shortly after the incident. Police spokeswoman Kim Jones reported that Seigel “blew a .142” in his breathalyzer test. Under Georgia law, individuals who operate a vehicle with a blood alcohol concentration of .08 grams or higher are deemed unfit to drive, allowing officers to charge Seigel with DUI, reckless driving and following too closely. The victim, Hamer-Hodges, was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital with several injuries, including a broken leg and ribs, as well as possible head trauma.
Need An Attorney For A Bicycle Accident Case In Marietta?
Using bicycles as transportation is common in the metro Atlanta area. They are great for the environment, healthy for the rider, convenient, and fun. Unfortunately, when those operating motor vehicles do not pay close attention to cyclists, terrible accidents can happen. The most common causes of Atlanta bicycle accidents include vehicles failing to yield at intersections, turning directly in front of a cyclist, sideswiping a cyclist, forcing a cyclist off the road, running a red light or stop sign, or being intoxicated while operating a motor vehicle. The latter materialized in Buckhead on Wednesday, causing significant injuries to an innocent Atlanta bicycle rider.
The severe, debilitating and permanent injuries that can arise from Marietta bicycle accidents result in financial losses to the individuals involved and their families. Georgia law provides injured persons the right to recover their damages from the responsible party, though. The successful Marietta bike accident attorneys at Jones & Swanson understand the laws for Georgia bicycle accidents and will gain the compensation that you deserve.
